I think there is some kind of points system that gives each high score in every other mode a certain number of points. If you get enough points, it unlocks free ride mode. I just had to clear Expert mode, other people have posted that they unlocked it only by playing Island Lap. Try getting 4 stars on each mode you currently have unlocked. If you already have 4 stars in Expert, try improving your score on that, but I highly doubt you? will have 4 stars on Expert and not unlock it.

You're very good at this! This game had me virtually crying with laughter because you actually have to flap your arms to? fly. Anybody cinsidering buying Wii Fit Plus should do so just for this game alone - it's so funny and well worth the £17!
